The Owl Shop was originally opened on Wall Street in 1934 by Joseph St. John who came to America from Greece in 1925. Beginning originally as a bookstore, he was also selling tobacco and mixing his own blends. In 1937, a second store on College Street was opened by Joseph and his wife Catherine, also of Greek descent. Expanding to having five stores they decided in 1951 to have everything under one roof, the College Street location. At the time when the Shubert Theatre was flourishing from the 30's - 60's, you might have seen Edward Robinson, Vincent Price, Van owlshopguyanim.gif (22534 bytes)Johnson, Alec Guiness, Rex Harrison, Olivia de Havilland or Helen Hayes visiting the shop. In those days the theatre brought lots of glamorous people to the area, but in 1977 the Shubert was closed. The Shubert has been re-opened and is again a thriving theatre in New Haven.

After the death of her husband, Catherine St. John kept the shop open, and with it, two of the shops original employees, who are still with the shop today. One is Fred D., who has been with the Owl Shop since 1958 with an expertise in pipe repair.. The other is Joe Lentine, who arrived in the 1960's. His specialty is mixing the tobaccos. The Owl Shop is now owned by Glen Greenberg, who has owned the shop since November 1998. Today the shop still maintains its fine reputation for being one of the last, best, quality tobacco shops in the county offering a 550 sf walk in humidor, cigar lounge, tobaccos blended on-premises, pipes, chess sets, music boxes (one of the few places you can find them), cutlery, writing instruments and much more. Stop in for a beverage and enjoy their new addition of the Owl Shop Tobacco Cafe.

Tobaccos

Here at the Owl Shop we have been offering world class tobacco as well as blending our own since 1934. We have been mailing each blend to our customers throughout the country and Europe for almost as long. Joe Lentine arrived at the Owl Shop in the 1960's. As our Cigar Manager, Joe is a true aficionado. Joe has a deep knowledge and passion for cigars and is our expert in mixing the tobaccos. Whether it's our most popular Mystique or Black Magic, with over sixty different varieties to choose from we guarantee to be able to match each man or woman with a pleasing smoke.

Pipe Repair

Fred D., who has been with the Owl Shop since 1958 is an expert in pipe repair. Fred can fix just about any pipe. Whatever condition, whether it's a Briar or Meerschaum and needs to be cleaned, or a simple stem or silver band replacement, Fred will refurbish them and your old pipes will look like new. If your pipe is sick, send it to the pipe doctor at the Owl Shop.
